Iran Natural Resources Gene Bank

About the Natural Resources Gene Bank

Plants provide the air we breathe, they provide clean water, fuel, building materials, fibres, resins and we all rely on plants for food. Plants also play a vital role in combating climate change. Plants maintain the atmosphere and counteract climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, turning it into plant material.

In the Iranian ecosystems, approximately 8000 plant species of 167 families and 1200 genera have been recorded. Today, nearly 2000 plant species of Iran are faced with the threat of extinction. Plants are dying out largely due to the activities of people. Clearing of primary vegetation, over-exploitation and climate change are all causing species losses.

Iran's Natural Resources Gene Bank aims to save plants of Iran with a focus on plants most at risk and most useful for the future. We have already successfully saved seeds from over 40% of the Iran's wild plant species. Our aim is to secure the safe storage of seed from 100% of the Iran’s bankable plants. We target plants and regions most at risk from climate change and the ever-increasing impact of human activities. We also save the seeds of the Iran's plant life faced with the threat of extinction, and those that could be of most use in the future.

The seeds we save are banked at Iran's Natural Resources Gene Bank at Research Institute of Forests and Ranglands (RIFR). We have seeds from all provinces around the Iran. We dry and clean the seeds and store them in sealed aluminum cases at +4°C and -20°C in the Natural Resources Gene Bank cold rooms. The Natural Resources Gene Bank holds more living plant diversity per square meter than anywhere on Iran and Middle East.

Collecting seed to save plants

Natural Resources Gene Bank (NRGB) aims to save plants of Iran with a focus of plants endemic, most at risk and most useful for the future. We collect seed of plant species under threat and from habitats at risk around the country. We aim to secure the safe storage of 100% of the bankable plants of Iran by 2022.

Saving seeds in the gene bank for future use

Conserving seeds through Natural Resources Gene Bank (NRGB) and other gene banks around the world provides options for human innovation, adaptation and resilience to cope with current and future environmental threats. The seeds we conserve are increasingly used for research into food, agriculture, forestry, health and eco-system repair. The reintroduction of locally appropriate wild plant species will become more and more important as the effects of climate change and other threats become more marked. Natural Resources Gene Bank (NRGB), other gene banks and botanic gardens worldwide are uniquely placed to enable these efforts.

Regeneration and evaluation

Regeneration and evaluation of seeds are one of the most important tasks of any gene bank to conserve and exploit the potential of genetic resources. But often there is not available enough information on how to restore and evaluate the seeds. Therefore researchers regenerate and evaluate seeds according to their studies and experiments, which in many cases is not comparable with other results. Natural Resources Gene Bank of Iran, based on many years of efforts to regenerate and evaluate natural resources seeds, intends to present its experiences for researchers. This section provides useful information on how to restore and evaluate seeds of different plant species.

Iran's Natural Resources Gene Bank has been protecting seeds of natural species since 1994 as a government exclusive agent. During its activity, it has collected and maintained over 47000 accessions belonging about 4000 plant species, from all over Iran. In future soon by Installation "Natural Resources Seed Information Database of Iran" you will have access to useful information of Natural Resources Gene Bank Seeds.

Seed Encyclopedia of Iran

Iran's Natural Resources Gene Bank has been protecting seeds of natural species since 1994 as a government exclusive agent. During its activity, it has collected and maintained over 47000 accessions belonging about 4000 plant species, from all over Iran. In this section, biological information of each plant species is available as a comprehensive database. Providing and collecting information on the biological properties of seeds is not only important for facilitating plant protection for the gene banks, but also as a reference for researchers. In this section, following information will provide for species exist in the Natural Resources Gene Bank:botany, geographic distribution, flowering and ripening period, pollination, seed dispersal mechanisms, seed storage behavior (orthodox, recalcitrant and intermediate), storage, germination and dormancy breaking requirements, seed morphology along with the seed image.
