Goals and Duties
- Objectives and functions of the poplar research group and fast growing species
· The strategic objectives of the poplar research group and fast growing species
- The objectives and policies of the poplar research group and fast growing species are based on the following research subjects:
· Monitoring wood farming in the country
- Ecology and study of genetic resources of natural sites of native and naturalized fast growing species (Populus caspica, Populus euphratica, Populus alba, Populus nigra and Salix alba) in the country
- Production and introduction of varieties and study on the compatibility of cultivars by plant breeding methods
- Capacity building for the production and development of wood farming
- The study of socio-economic of wood farming in the country
- Increasing the level of mechanization in order to reduce production costs
- Conservation and enhancing of genetic resources of fast growing species (Populus, Salix, Eucalyptus, Paulownia) through creating of germplasm collections or maternal gardens in prone areas of the country
- Enhancing and activating of the National Poplar Commission (NPC) through communication with public and private organizations and annual meetings and communicating with the International Poplar Commission (IPC) to enhance research activities
- Tasks of poplar research group and fast growing species
- Study of compatibility of different species, clones and cultivars of poplar in the country's ecological and climatic conditions
- Study of performance of the production different clones of native and exotic poplar and fast growing trees in the country's climatic and geographical conditions
- Study of the best spacing of poplar cultivars and fast growing trees in different regions of the country
- Monitoring the conditions of the poplar cultivation in different regions of the country
- Study of performance the suitable production of poplar and fast growing trees in short rotation system
- Study of increasing performance wood production of poplar cultivars using various fertilizer combinations
- Effect of salinity stress on different poplar cultivars
- Using of new irrigation methods and increase irrigation efficiency in projects of seedling production and wood production
- Determination the capacities and potential of non-conventional water in different areas of the country for the development of wood farming
- Planting suitable poplar cultivars and fast growing species using non-conventional water (urban sewage)
- Study of socio-economic issues of wood production (including consumption, sale, import, export, market, valuation systems and etc.)
- Intercropping of poplar cultivars and fast growing trees with agronomy crops (agroforestry)
- The development of wood farming with a protective approach and green space (preservation and stabilization the side walls of rivers and surrounding cities as urban protecting green belts)
- Conservation of genetic resources of the fast growing species (Populus, Salix, Eucalyptus, Paulownia) through creating of germplasm collections or maternal gardens in prone areas of the country
- Study of the vegetative structure and natural sites of Populus caspica and Populus euphratica in the country in order to preservation and development of genetic reserves
- Using the capabilities of seed genotypes for creating of intra-specific diversity in natural stands of Populus caspica, Populus euphratica and Salix alba
